Overview

After logging into the Azure Portal, you should first get an overview of it.

Azure Portal

Some notes:

  • On the left side (Point 1) is the portal menu. Here you can navigate to the individual services of the Azure Cloud.
  • On the top navigation bar (Point 2) you see the global search, which provides easy access to services, resources, or documentation.
  • In the center (Point 3) you see the detail area.

Terminology

Azure uses two terms that you need to understand before proceeding.

  • The services provided by Azure are called Service. For example, Azure Virtual Machines is a Service.
  • When you order a service, Azure provides you with a Resource.

There are several ways to view the details of a new Subscription:

  1. You can enter the name of the Subscription in the global search.
  2. You can list all Subscriptions. The new one should also appear there.

In the Azure Portal, click into the text field of the global search and enter the name of the Subscription. The subscription should then appear under Resources in the search suggestions.

Global Search

Via the Subscription Service

To access a Service in Azure, you can also use the global search bar.

In the Azure Portal, click into the text field of the global search and enter Subscription as the search term. A Service named Subscription should appear as a result.

Global Search for a Service

Clicking on the result will display the available Subscriptions as a list. The new Subscription should also be listed there.

Details of the New Subscription

Detail view of a Subscription

The details of the Subscription show various information directly:

  • The metadata of the Subscription is listed in a table. Note the Subscription ID: This is the internally used unique identifier of a Subscription. The Tenant ID is also a unique identifier for the Azure Tenant of the University of Bern.
  • The ongoing costs of the resources in the Subscription are displayed. There is also a forecast of how much the resources will cost by the end of the month.

In the left menu, there are two special sections:

  • Resource Groups
  • Resources

Both links show the corresponding Resources within this Subscription. The following diagram illustrates this tree structure:

architecture-beta
    group azure[Azure]
    group subz[Subscriptions] in azure
    group rgz[Resource Groups] in azure
    group rz[Resources] in azure

    service sub(azure:subscriptions) in subz
    service rg(azure:resource-groups) in rgz
    service r1(azure:key-vaults) in rz
    service r2(azure:virtual-machine) in rz
    service r3(azure:virtual-networks) in rz

    sub{group}:B --> T:rg{group}
    rg{group}:B --> T:r3{group}

    r3:L -- R:r2
    r3:R -- L:r1

This means a virtual machine can be assigned to a Resource Group, which in turn belongs to a Subscription.

For each service, you can now find the corresponding resource by (just like with the Subscription):

  • Using the global search menu to look for the resource name.
  • Using the global search menu to look for the corresponding Service and find it in the displayed list.

Next Steps

When ordering a Subscription, a standard budget is defined. You should first adjust this to your own needs. To do this, you must first activate the Owner role. See the article here to learn more about permissions.
