The Switch Cloud is the cloud offering from Switch for the Swiss education and research sector and provides Infrastructure-as-a-Service offerings with data location Switzerland. The University of Bern uses the Switch Cloud through the existing agreement with Switch; procurement is handled centrally by IT Services, and billing is handled by Switch.
Procurement and Projects
Workloads in the Switch Cloud are organized in so-called projects. IT Services provide a dedicated project per organizational unit or per initiative and grant access to the registered users.
- Ordering of the project through IT Services (Cloud team); order form
- Provisioning of the project and authorization of the registered users by IT Services
- Within the project, organizational units procure and manage their cloud resources independently
- Additional permissions within the project are managed by the organizational units
Available Services
Within a Switch Cloud project, the Infrastructure-as-a-Service offerings provided by Switch are available:
- Switch Cloud Compute: Product page | Documentation
- Switch Cloud Block Storage: Product page | Documentation
- Switch Cloud Kubernetes: Product page | Documentation
- Switch Cloud S3: Product page | Documentation
- Switch Cloud Portal: Documentation
Network and Identity
A connection between the Switch Cloud and the internal network of the University of Bern is currently not available. Projects are exclusively reachable via the public endpoints provided by Switch. Authentication against the Switch Cloud is handled through the Switch edu-ID of each authorized person.
Pricing and Billing
- Billing is handled quarterly by Switch to the cost center of the organizational unit
- Billing is based on the project costs reported by Switch
- Current pricing information is not publicly available and can be requested directly from Switch via the contact page.
Governance, Security and ISDS
- Data location Switzerland through operation at Switch
- Requirements for classification and handling of particularly sensitive personal data according to an ISDS concept to be created if required
- Responsibility for the secure operation of the own workloads within the project lies with the organizational unit
Consulting and Enablement
Since the Switch Cloud does not offer a setup pre-integrated by IT Services, users are primarily reliant on the documentation and support of Switch for the setup and operation of their workloads. IT Services provide assistance with the procurement of a project and facilitate contact with Switch when required.
